Prepd by the action of NaOH on an alcoholic soln of benzaldehyde and acetophenone: E. P. Kohler, H. M. Chadwell, Org. Synth. coll. vol. I, 78 (1941).

Properties

Pale-yellow orthorhombic prisms from petr ether. mp 57-58°. d462 1.0712. bp760 345-348° (slight decompn). bp25 208°. nD62 1.6458. Freely sol in ether, chloroform, carbon bisulfide, benzene; slightly in alcohol; very sparingly in cold petr ether.
