Prepd in 42% yield by boiling quinine with
nitric and fuming nitric acid: Ternájgo, Monatsh. Chem. 21, 448 (1900); cf. Kirpal, ibid. 23, 248 (1902); Kaas, ibid. 252; by selenium dioxide oxidation
of isoquinoline: Mueller, US 2436660 (1948 to Allied Chem.).
Properties
Crystals from acidulated water, mp 256°. On heating, a small portion
sublimes without decompn. Strong acid. Sparingly sol in hot alc,
ether, benzene. Insol in chloroform.Derivative
