Properties

Pure CuO (tenorite) is a steel-grey to black p-type semiconductor, mp 1330°. d 6.4. Insol in water. Slightly sol in alkalis; sol in acids and ammonia. Heat of formation (25°): -37.1 kcal/mol.

Use

As pigment in glass, ceramics, enamels, porcelain glazes, artificial gems; in mfr of rayon, other Cu compds; in sweetening petr gases; in galvanic electrodes; as flux in metallurgy; in correcting Cu deficiencies in soil; as optical-glass polishing agent; in antifouling paints, pyrotechnic compositions; as exciter in phosphor mixtures; as catalyst for organic reactions; in high temp superconductors; as source of oxygen; in determn of nitrogen.
