Prepd from cholic acid by oxidation with CrO3 in glacial acetic acid: Hammarsten in Abderhalden's Handbuch der Biol. Arbeitsmethoden, Abt. I, Teil 6, p 238 (1925); by using chlorine
instead of CrO3: Hinkley, Singleton, US 2966499 (1960 to Merck & Co.).
