Prepd by reduction of hexanoylresorcinol with
zinc amalgam + dil HCl: Dohme et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 48, 1688 (1926); Twiss, ibid. 2206; DE 488419 and DE 489117 (both 1929 to Sharp & Dohme). Toxicity: Lamson et al., J. Pharmacol. Exp. Ther. 53, 198 (1935).
Properties
Pale yellow, heavy liquid becoming solid on standing
at room temp. Needles from benzene or petr ether, mp 67.5-69°. bp6-7 178-180°; bp13-14 198-200°; bp760 333-335°. Pungent odor; sharp astringent taste. Sol in ether, chloroform,
acetone, alcohol, vegetable oils; slightly sol in petr ether; sol
in about 2000 parts water. LD50 orally in rats: 550 mg/kg (Lamson).Caution
