Description and references
Prepd by adding finely powdered iodine to an
excess of liq chlorine, which is then boiled away: Thomas, Depuis, Compt. Rend. 143, 282 (1906);

Properties
Long yellow or brownish needles or fluffy powder.
Pungent, irritating odor. Corrosive to human
skin. Must be stored in well closed
amber glass bottles, preferably in refrigerator. d4 3.203. mp ≈33°. Volatile at
room temp. mp 101° at
16 atm (pressure of its satd vapor). A pressure of 1 atm is
reached at 64°. Complete decompn into ICl and Cl2 at 77°.
Generally used as a 20 to 35% soln in concd HCl.Caution
Concd solns are strongly irritating.Use
Chlorinating and oxidizing agent.
