The term iodophor may be applied to any product in which surface active agents (such as nonoxynol, q.v.) or polymers (such as polyvinylpyrrolidone, cf. povidone-iodine) act as carriers and solubilizing agents for iodine. Other examples: Biopal CVL-10; Dermevan; Idonyx; Iobac; Ioprep; Iosan; Kleenodyne; Rhudane; Showersan; Wescodyne; Westamine X. An iodophor usually enhances the bactericidal activity of iodine, reduces vapor pressure and odor. Staining is almost nonexistent and wide dilution with water is possible. Examples of prepn: Shelanski, Winicov, US 2710277 (1955 to West Labs); Scheib et al., US 2977315 (1961 to Lazarus Labs). Germicidal activity: C. A. Lawrence et al., J. Am. Pharm. Assoc. 46, 500 (1957). Reviews of manufacture, properties and use: D. R. Batey, Aust. J. Dairy Technol. 31, 5-7 (1976); A. Leitmanova et al., Pharmazie 42, 809-813 (1987).
