Prepd by passing ammonia into a mixture of maleic anhydride and an inert solvent such as xylene, dioxane, etc.: Robinson, Humburger, US 2459964 (1949 to Beck, Koller).

Crystals from alcohol, mp 172-173°. Also reported as mp 178-180° (dec). Very sol in water, hot alcohol. Practically insol in ether, chloroform, benzene.
