Description and references

Prepd by the action of the sodium salt of p-phenolsulfonic acid on yellow mercuric oxide: Lumière, Chevrottier, Compt. Rend. 132, 145 (1901); Lumière, Perrin, Pharmacie 1, 102 (1943). The commercial product is a mixture of the monosulfonate (80%) and the disulfonate.

Properties

White powder. One gram dissolves in 5 ml water. The aq soln does not coagulate albuminous matter.

Caution

Ingestion or percutaneous absorption may cause mercury poisoning.

Use

As germicide in soaps and lotions. Usual concn in soap about 1:100.
