Properties
Light yellow needles or prisms; peculiar, aromatic
odor. d 1.495. mp 44-45°. bp 214-216°. Volatile with steam.
Slightly sol in cold water, freely in hot water, in alcohol, benzene,
ether, carbon disulfide, alkali hydroxides. LD50 orally in mice, rats: 1.297, 2.828 g/kg, K. C. Back et al., Reclassification of Materials Listed as Transportation
Health Hazards (TSA-20-72-3; PB214-270, 1972).Use
Manuf dyes, paint colorings, rubber chemicals, and
fungicides. Indicator in 2% alc soln. pH: 5.0 colorless, 7.0 yellow,
but the color change is not sharp and cannot be used where CO
2 is present; as reagent for glucose.
