Prepn by reduction of p-nitrophenetole: West, J. Chem. Soc. 127, 494 (1925). Prepn from nitrobenzene, ethanol, Mg, and sulfuric acid: Yukawa, J. Chem. Soc. Jpn. 71, 547 (1950).

Colorless liquid; becomes red to brown on exposure to air and light. d416 1.0652; mp about 3°; bp 253-255°. Practically insol in water. Sol in alcohol. Keep well closed and protected from light.
