Description and references
One of the Grignard reagents. Prepd by reacting
chlorobenzene with magnesium at reflux temperatures in the presence
of catalytic amounts of an organic nitrate: Ramsden, US 2816937 (1957 to M. & T. Corp.).
Properties
Sol in ether (ethyl ether, other ethers may be
used as solvents). A solution which is about 3 molar has an approx
strength of 48%, and a d420 of ≈1.15. Reacts with water, steam or acids to
produce toxic and flammable vapors with evolution of heat.Use
In organic synthesis, especially in the production
of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, organic acids, amines, silicones,
boranes.
