Description and references

An oil from Pinus palustris Mill. and certain other species of pines, Pinaceae. It is obtained from pitch-soaked pine wood by steam distillation or solvent extraction followed by steam distillation and also by destructive distillation. It consists mainly of isomeric tertiary and secondary, cyclic terpene alcohols.

Properties

Colorless to pale yellow liquid, turpentine-like odor. d about 0.9; bp 200-220°. Flammable. Insol in water. Sol in the usual organic solvents.

Caution

Irritating to skin, mucous membranes. Large doses may cause CNS depression.

Use

Pharmaceutic aid (flavor and perfume). Manuf terpin hydrate and other terpin products; as a solvent, disinfectant and deodorant; in textile scouring; for flotation of lead and zinc ores.
