Prepd by heating a xylene soln of phenothiazine
and 3-dimethylamino-1-chloropropane in the presence of sodamide:
Charpentier, US 2519886 (1950 to Rh^one-Poulenc).

Properties
White to slightly yellow crystals, dec 181° (microblock).
Oxidizes upon prolonged exposure to air and acquires a blue or pink
color. Hygroscopic. One gram dissolves in about 3 ml water. Sol
in methanol, ethanol, chloroform. Practically insol in ether, benzene.
Aq solns are slightly acid to litmus. Incompatible with alkalies,
oxidizing agents, heavy metals.Therapeutic Category
