8126. Red Fluorescent Protein

Nomenclature

RFP.

Description and references

Tetrameric, 28kDa, fluorescent protein responsible for the red coloration of the Discosoma coral. Named following the pattern of two lower case letters indicating the species, FP for fluorescent protein, and the emission maximum wavelength in nm. Identification and cloning from Discosoma by homology to green fluorescent protein, q.v.: M. V. Matz et al., Nat. Biotechnol. 17, 969 (1999); S. A. Lukyanov et al., WO 0034324 (2000 to Clontech).
