A strongly basic polypeptide gastrointestinal hormone, produced primarily in the duodenum and jejunum. Released in response to gastric acid delivered into the duodenal lumen; stimulates exocrine pancreatic secretion of water and bicarbonate and inhibits gastric acid secretion and emptying.
