Description and references
A glycoside or a mixture of glycosides obtained
from Strophanthus kombé Oliv., Apocynaceae.
Properly speaking K-strophanthoside contains α-glucose 19%, β-glucose
19%, cymarose 15%, strophanthidin 47%. K-Strophanthin-β (Strophosid)
contains β-glucose, cymarose, and strophanthidin: Geissberger, Schweiz. Med. Wochenschr. 91, 241

Properties
White or yellowish powder contg as much as 10%
water, which it does not lose entirely without decompn. Poisonous. Stable in air, but affected by
light. Soluble in water and in dil alcohol; less sol in abs alcohol.
Nearly insol in chloroform, ether, benzene. Aq solns are neutral
to litmus. When bioassayed, strophanthin shall possess a potency
per mg equivalent to 0.5 mg of U.S.P. Ouabain Reference Standard.
A deviation of 20% is permitted. MLD in cats,
rats (mg/kg): 0.11, 9.4 i.v. (Mehnert).Derivative
