Prepd from resorcinol and ammonium thiocyanate in presence of copper sulfate: Werner, US 2332418 (1943 to Winthrop); Urushibara, Koga, Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn. 29, 419 (1956); Berg, Fiedler, US 2886488 (1959 to Thomae). Formerly believed to be the 4-hydroxy isomer: Fiedler, Ber. 95, 1771 (1962).

Crystals from water, mp 160°. Practically insol in water. Sol in ethanol, isopropanol, propylene glycol, ether, benzene, toluene. Hydrolyzed by alkali.
