White to off-white crystalline powder, slight, faintly aromatic odor. mp 54-57.3°. Vapor pressure (20°C) 4 × 106 mm Hg. pKa 7.9. Insol in water. Readily sol in alkaline solns and many organic solvents.

Bacteriostat and preservative for cosmetic and detergent prepns.
