Prepd by ether reduction of triphenylchloromethane
obtained by reaction of carbon tetrachloride and benzene in the presence

Properties
Orthorhombic pyramidal, solvated crystals containing
one mol benzene, mp 78.2°, dries on exposure to air. When dry, mp 93.4° (stable form; there are 2 metastable
forms). d4100 1.0134; bp760 360°; bp200 239.7°; bp100 228°; bp60 221°; bp40 215.5°; bp20 206.8°; bp10 197°; bp5 188°; bp1.0 170°. nD100 1.59546. Very sol in ether, hot alcohol, chloroform. Sol in petr ether,
benzene, CS2. Slightly sol in glacial acetic acid. Soly

in hexane; 53 in CS2; 7.24 parts in benzene (19°).
