Degraded carrageenan. Sulfated polysaccharide,
extracted from Chondrus crispus (L.) Stackhouse, Gigartinaceae. Prepn: Anderson, J. Pharm. Pharmacol. 13, 139 (1961); Anderson, Hargreaves, GB 840623 (1960 to Evans Medical).
Properties
Off-white powder containing 28-30% unchanged bound
sulfate. Typical data: S 9.4%, Ca 0.2%, Na 7%, K 1.3%. [α]D +34°. Freely sol in water and acid. Aq soln less viscous than the aq
soln of the parent carrageenan.Therapeutic Category
Antacid.
