Prepared by evaporating a neutral aq soln of NH4NO2 and CoCl2: Erdmann, J. Prakt. Chem. 97, 410 (1866); Gibbs, Proc. Am. Acad. 10, 13 (1875); improved technique: Jrgensen, Z. Anorg. Chem. 17, 477 (1898). Prepn from CoCO3 and NH4NO2: Harkins et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 38, 2647 (1916).

Properties

Dark, reddish-brown, orthorhombic bipyramidal crystals. d420 1.972. Sol in water. A 1% aq soln is precipitated by AgNO3, Tl2SO4, CsCl, RbCl, cinchonine sulfate.
