Prepd by heating dibromodimethoxybenzil in nitrobenzene in the presence of aluminum chloride: Kuhn et al., Ber. 76, 900 (1943).

Properties

Flexible, lemon-colored needles or yellow powder from glacial acetic acid. Odorless, tasteless. mp 212-213°. Practically insol in water. Freely sol in alcohol, benzene. Sol in acetone, ether. Sol in dil NaOH yielding solns of an intense deep yellow color.

Use

Antiseptic, germicide.
