working knowledge of and appreciation for project management and financial tools and techniques.
For any one individual to become knowledgeable and equally proficient in such a wide range of skills would certainly be a remarkable achievement. However, there are a few critical personal traits and project experiences which, honed properly, provide the leader with sufficient tools to manage a team successfully. Clearly, unambiguous support from senior management is a prerequisite, for without it, less than desirable outcomes usually result. The proven ability to communicate effectively and the consistent demonstration of successful achievement, drive, commitment, and enthusiasm are key drivers for success. The project leader must pay a great deal of attention to organizing his team with particular emphasis on enumerating and agreeing on individual and team expectations, responsibilities, and scope of authority. By building on this foundation and by ensuring that team operating procedures are in place and are supported by the organization, the project leader and the project leader's team will be well equipped to face challenges.
II.
Organizational Support and Commitment to Project Teams and Project Management
To effectively manage an international team, a project leader must overcome national, functional, and organizational boundaries which pose obstacles to the achievement of the stated mission. To be successful, it is paramount that senior management provide clear support and consistently articulate their expectations that all members of their organization be aligned with the goals and efforts of the project team.
A successful project leader must be able to effectively and efficiently address complex project-related issues and problems which invariably come up during drug development. Paramount among these is the importance placed on building an international team from a group of individuals, who come from fairly diverse disciplines, backgrounds, and cultures, and demonstrating the capability to consistently and successfully overcome organizational roadblocks which negatively affect the project team's performance. A project leader must count on the assistance of senior management when needed and be assured that their support is communicated whole-heartedly to the organization as unambiguously as possible. This support must be consistently reinforced at key times throughout the long drug development process.
