Prepn starting with 2,3-monoacetone-l-sorbomethylose: Müller, Reichstein, Helv. Chim. Acta 21, 273 (1938). Alternative procedure: CH 203549 and CH 209587 (1939 and 1940, both to Hoffmann-La Roche).

Properties

Stout prisms from ethyl acetate, mp 168°. Sublimes at 10-3 mm and 160°. [α]D22 +36.7° (0.1N HCl). Freely sol in water; sol in acetone, alcohol; sparingly sol in ethyl acetate. Practically insol in ether.
