Seventeen amino acid neuropeptide identified as the endogenous ligand of the orphan opioid receptor, ORL-1. Shows a wide variety of pharmacological effects. Structurally related to the opioids, but does not bind to opiate receptors. Isoln from rat brain: J.-C. Meunier et al., Nature 377, 532 (1995); from porcine hypothalmus: R. K. Reinscheid et al., Science 270, 792 (1995). Distribution and localization of binding with opioid peptides: S. Schulz et al., NeuroReport 7, 3021 (1996). Binding affinity: I. D. Adapa, L. Toll, Neuropeptides 31, 403 (1997). Review: J.-C. Meunier, Eur. J. Pharmacol. 340, 1-15 (1997). Review of pharmacology and structure-activity: G. Henderson, A. T. McKnight, Trends Pharmacol. Sci. 18, 293-300 (1997).
