Powdered, dried root of Rauwolfia serpentina (L.) Benth. Apocynaceae, a small shrub native to the Orient from India to Sumatra. Contains many indole alkaloids of which reserpine, rescinnamine and deserpidine are the primary constitutents. Others include: reserpiline, yohimbine, ajmaline, serpentine, serpetinine.
