Prepd by the action of emulsin on salicin; by heating phenol with methylene chloride and aq NaOH.

Plates or cryst powder. d 1.16. mp 86-87°; sublimes at 100°. Soluble in 15 parts water; very sol in alcohol, chloroform, ether, sol in benzene. Gives a red color with H2SO4.
