Available from the Roche synthesis of biotin: Randall et al., J. Pharmacol. Exp. Ther. 97, 48 (1949); Scurr, Wyman, Lancet 1, 338 (1954). May be prepd by treating (+)-3,4-(1,3-dibenzylureylene)tetrahydro-2-oxothiophene with 3-ethoxypropylmagnesium bromide, followed by reduction, ring closure, and conversion into the (+)-β-camphorsulfonate. Chemical structure

Properties

Bitter crystals, dec ≈245°. [α]D20 +22.0° (c = 4 in water). One gram dissolves in less than 5 ml water and in less than 2 ml alcohol. Slightly sol in acetone, ether; pH of a 1% aq soln is 5.0-6.0.
